Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was a Mexican-American singer and entertainer from Texas who grew to fame quickly in the late 80s and early 90s. Yolanda Saldívar was a super-fan of Selena and was appointed president of her official fan club in 1991 after Selena's father and manager, Abraham Quintanilla Jr, appointed her. Her role was to collect payment from fans who wished to join the fan club, manage their memberships, and send merchandise and other fan club offerings to members. By 1994, Saldívar was also managing two of Selena's boutiques in Texas along with running the fan club.

During this time, Saldívar became more and more obsessed with Selena, converting her home into a makeshift shrine to the entertainer. She also became increasingly possessive over Selena, and attempted to limit Selena's interactions with her other employees. By 1994, it became clear that Saldívar was embezzling thousands of dollars from the singer and had also stolen various items and financial records. She was fired from her role as fan club president and was in the process of being fired as manager of the boutiques.

On March 30, 1995, Selena went to the hotel room where Saldívar was staying at the Days Inn off of Navigation Blvd. in Corpus Christi to retrieve some perfume samples that she believed were stolen by Saldívar. The pair argued loud enough for other hotel residents to hear. At some point during the argument, Saldívar pulled out a gun that she had purchased less than 3 weeks prior and shot Selena as she attempted to flee the room. The bullet pierced a major artery in Selena's chest, and she left a trail of blood as she ran to the lobby of the hotel, screaming for help. As she was dying, she was able to state the name of her attacker and the room where she was shot. Selena was just 23 years old when she died.

After the attack, Saldívar locked herself inside her truck in the hotel parking lot and threatened to commit suicide. After 9 hours of negotiations with FBI agents, they were able to successfully take Saldívar into custody. At trial, Saldívar pleaded not guilty, claiming that the shooting was accidental. She was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. She will be eligible for parole in 2025

The Days Inn is now called the Knights Inn and is located right off of Highway 37 on Navigation Blvd. The room number where Selena was shot was #158, but the room has been renumbered to #150. Selena ultimately died in the lobby. There is a small memorial for Selena in the lobby close to the location where she died. It appears that the hotel continues to rent out the room where Selena was shot, but it's unclear if that room can be requested.
