You are watching: Bmw x5 odometer display not working

Well I seem to have a problem, my odometer and tripometer spot on the dash no longer display anything. The rest of the dashboard seems to be working fine. Is there a quick fix or does this sound like the capacitor problem? Or perhaps just a blown fuse?...wishful thinking

Mine was busted a while ago as well.If the light is blown you should still be able to see the display if you look really closely. To replace the bulb you need to remove the cluster.I was able to remove the cluster without removing the steering wheel. I managed to just barely slide it out through the steering wheel and back in again by rotating the steering wheel to one side.MAKE SURE TO DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY BEFORE REMOVING YOUR CLUSTER OR YOU MAY BE ABLE TO TRIP THE SRS LIGHTSee the below thread. Hope this helps...http://www.dearteassociazione.org/forums/showthread.php?t=104881
I just did this last friday, under the cluster the steering column mounts with two self tapping screws, just remove the kick panel and unbolt those the steering wheel will come down far enough to slide the cluster out with ease but like tim said, the orange harness under the steering wheel MUST BE UNPLUGGED but only when the battery is unplugged!

Well you were right, I looked really close and was able to see the display. So now I just got to yank it and replace the bulb.
If you have no airbag:http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/dash_bulbs/changingClusterBulbs.htmIf you have an airbag:http://www.lehrmangroup.com/rickard/airBagAndBulbs.htmlOP, I believe you have the Gen. III cluster with a blue back. But it might be white depending on the cars build date. The bulbs are 1.5 watts and they have a white base.Use realoem.com to get a part number.
Hi all. Almost for sure a blown bulb. The link from Tim as to remove the steering wheel but it can be easily done with the wheel on place. As said, undo the 2 bolts below the steering wheel and let the steering wheel go down. You can push a little and then secure with one bolt down. The quadrant is divided in three parts. For easy removal I found easier to remove the bottom part (disconnect the four quick fastener and turn two wheels on thwe upper middle to OPEN.Separate the bottom and remove it from behind the steering and then the rest. The bulbs are connected to the bottom.Very easy. Enjoy.Best regards
Have same problem, if you remove and unplug the cluster what"s the risk of the mileomiter resetting itself or does it remember internally? ??

You"ll be fine, your miles wont reset, the coding plug keeps it in memory, just your trip milage will reset no big deal..welcome to the party.

No problem, just take care BMW didnt allow much extra cable to pull the cluster out & the connections may be a little brittle from age, but seeing as your from scotland they maybe a bit better, heat causes them to deteriorate faster.
